Freedom(R), a Rose in Honor of Rosa Parks

Rosa Parks received world-wide acclaim when, on December 1, 1955, she refused the orders of a bus driver in Montgomery, Alabama to surrender her seat to a white male passenger. Her subsequent arrest sparked a 381-day Bus Boycott led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., leading to the 1956 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that segregation on buses was unconstitutional. Mrs. Parks received hundreds of awards, including the President's Medal of Freedom in 1996, and is distinguished in history books as the mother of the modern day Civil Rights movement.
Two evangelists lose clout on ORU's board

Creflo Dollar resigned from the regents, and Benny Hinn is now a "regent emeritus" with no voting power. The evangelist Creflo Dollar has resigned from the Oral Roberts University board of regents, and another evangelist, Benny Hinn, has lost his status as a voting mem ber of the board. ORU's spokesman Jeremy Burton confirmed Wednesday that Dollar had resigned and that Hinn had been named a "regent emeritus" without a vote on the board. Both refused last week to respond to a Senate inquiry into lavish spending by evangelists. A Canadian businessman, Richard Pearson, has been named to ORU's board of business regents.
SWAT team nets barricaded man
Police arrested a 26-year-old Mesa man Monday after he was suspected of stealing $20 and a car from his mother, then backing into a patrol car and barricading himself inside a house. Yuri Felipe Salazar Roldan was booked on suspicion of car theft, robbery and criminal damage, Mesa police said. The incident began Monday around 11:35 a.m. in the 1700 block of East Greenway Street after Roldan robbed his mother, police said. He fled the house and police arrived. .
Condos called catalyst for change in the Quartier des spectacles
Developers unveiled plans yesterday for a 28-storey condominium tower that they hope will help reanimate the downtown Quartier des spectacles. The $70-million Louis Bohème is being built at the southwest corner of Bleury St. and de Maisonneuve Blvd., atop the Place des Arts métro. The building will include 282 condominiums, ranging from 675-square-foot one-bedroom units to three luxury terrace apartments. .
